From sea to sky, we live in Bear Country. Black bears can be found anywhere on the North Shore, at any time of day or year. Access to foods from humans activity contributes to a shorter denning season for black bears. Across the North Shore bears are expanding their range, and while sightings in densely populated areas like Central and Lower Lonsdale used to be rare – today they are becoming more frequent.
In 1999 after 39 bears were killed, the North Shore Black Bear Network was formed with the goal to increase understanding of bear behaviour and reduce the number of black bears killed on the North Shore. The volunteer network became a non-profit society in 2005. We provide residents with wildlife education and support to bring us closer to our vision of peaceful coexistence and zero bear deaths on the North Shore.
